Sicily in winter is worth it above all for cities, museums and archaeological sites; beach holidays and skiing should not be the only basis of your planning. Between November and March you can visit Palermo, Syracuse and Agrigento if you choose opening days and connections carefully. In Ortigia the walk by the sea remains, in Palermo the next museum is waiting, and near Agrigento the temples are the focus outside the bathing season. The plan changes, but it is far from empty.
Key takeaways
- The Valley of the Temples near Agrigento publishes daily opening and is not a summer-only destination.
- The Museo Salinas in Palermo and the Museo Paolo Orsi in Syracuse are normally closed on Mondays.
- The almond blossom near Agrigento belongs to late winter; the date of the Mandorlo in Fiore festival is set by the events calendar.
- For skiing on Etna, Etna Nord with Piano Provenzana is the main option. Open pistes depend on suitable snow and operating conditions.
- Liberty Lines also publishes winter timetables for the Aeolian Islands. A seasonal change to the service does not mean the island services stop altogether.

Which places suit the period from November to March?
For a winter trip we recommend a lived-in city as your base, in particular Palermo or Syracuse. Agrigento is worth it if the Valley of the Temples should have a fixed place in your trip.
Palermo combines old town, markets and museums. On one day you can wander through the lanes, on another visit a collection or choose a performance. Centrally located accommodation makes this switch easier, because you do not need a transfer every time for dinner or small errands.
In Syracuse, Ortigia suits travellers who like to explore on foot. The view over the water is part of the city walk without having to turn into a beach day. The Paolo Orsi museum adds an indoor visit to the old town, which you can bring forward in bad weather.
Catania is a possible base if you also plan an Etna excursion. We would choose the accommodation so that a cancelled mountain day is easily absorbed. A plan that depends entirely on open facilities is needlessly rigid in winter.
Which sights stay open?
Large museums and archaeological sites keep their regular visiting hours outside the summer season too. What matters are their rest days, shorter Sunday hours and possible special arrangements.

These published details are helpful for your planning:
- Museo Salinas, Palermo: Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 18:30, Sunday from 9:00 to 13:00; closed on Mondays.
- Museo Paolo Orsi, Syracuse: Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 19:00, on public holidays from 9:00 to 13:45; closed on Mondays. The ticket office closes before the museum.
- Valley of the Temples, Agrigento: The park administration gives daily admission from 8:30 to 19:00 and leaving the park until 20:00.
- Museo Pietro Griffo, Agrigento: daily from 9:00 to 19:30; the ticket office closes half an hour earlier.
These details belong to the published regular operation. For public holidays, special events or weather warnings, check the notices for your day of visit. The official opening hours of the Agrigento park also list the associated facilities, which do not automatically have the same hours.
Our advice: visit the temples in the bright part of the day and keep the museum for later. On a walk between the monuments you want to see the surroundings and be able to take breaks, rather than aiming only for the last admission.

Show Sicily offersWhen is Agrigento worth visiting for the almond blossom?
For almond blossom near Agrigento, late winter is of interest, especially the period around February and March. Blossom and cultural festival are different things, however: the date of the event does not guarantee a particular state of blossom on every tree.

The official tourism portal links the Sagra del Mandorlo in Fiore with this time of year. The municipality publishes the actual festival date separately. If the performances matter to you, plan your trip around the confirmed programme; if you mainly want to see trees in bloom, you also need current reports from the region.
The temples remain a rewarding destination even if the blossom comes earlier or later. We would therefore not book Agrigento solely for a hoped-for photo. Plan the park, the archaeological museum and time in the town, and the stay has its own content even without blossoming almond branches.
Can you ski on Etna in winter?
Skiing on Etna is possible with enough snow cover and open facilities, but it is not a reliably available programme on every winter day. EtnaSci points to Etna Nord at Piano Provenzana; in its notes, Etna Sud is listed as a ski station that is not operational.
Check the snow report, the open lifts and the information on access immediately before the trip. A winter date alone says nothing about which piste is actually usable. Even where snow is present, that does not automatically mean that facilities and roads are open.
The cable car on the southern side is a separate matter. It belongs to the excursion offer of the Funivia dell’Etna, whose operation also depends on current conditions and clearances. An offered cable car ride does not imply that skiing is open.
We recommend treating the mountain as a flexible excursion day. Keep a city or museum visit ready as an alternative and book special activities with clear cancellation terms. For hikes and guided tours, the current access rules of the responsible municipalities also apply.
Which ferries keep running in winter?
Services to the inhabited islands are not stopped across the board in winter. Liberty Lines publishes winter timetables for the Aeolian Islands, for example, while for the Siremar ferries you check the timetables of Caronte & Tourist Isole Minori.
The important distinction is between scheduled services and tourist excursion trips. A summer round trip or an additional seasonal connection may be dropped even though the island remains reachable. Conversely, a direct connection that runs in summer must not be carried over unchecked into a winter itinerary.
Use the Liberty Lines timetable overview for the valid period and check the current service notices before departure. For Siremar, the validity date of the downloaded timetable must also match. An older monthly sheet is no confirmation for your trip.
Rough seas can prevent departures. We therefore advise against scheduling the return from a smaller island immediately before a firmly booked flight home. If the island visit is only an optional extra, it is better to decide at short notice according to the actual connections.
What does the low season mean for hotels and restaurants?
A winter stay needs accommodation whose operation and services are confirmed for your dates. With a seasonal beach hotel, check the restaurant, heating and any announced leisure facilities one by one.
A mention of a pool is of little help without information on opening and heating. The same goes for a restaurant that appears in the description but is not necessarily working during your stay. Have the services that matter to you confirmed before booking.
In a beach resort, also check which places to eat are within walking distance and open on your travel days. A closed beach club does not prevent a walk by the sea. It does mean you should not automatically count on sunbeds, showers or beach catering.
Pack for varied activities: clothing in several layers, rain protection and shoes for city streets and sightseeing. For Etna you need separate equipment that suits the excursion you have booked. Clothing for an afternoon on the coast is no substitute for preparing for a day in the mountains.
How do you make the most of the low season on a budget?
Only concrete flight and accommodation offers can tell you if your winter trip will be cheaper. We recommend comparing several travel dates with the same services you want, rather than assuming a blanket winter discount.
Check in particular what is included in the total price. Inexpensive accommodation outside the centre may make extra transfers necessary. A centrally located room with breakfast can be more practical for your trip even if the bare nightly price is higher.
For a focused trip we would combine either Palermo with a stay in Agrigento, or Catania with Syracuse. Schedule sightseeing around opening days and keep the weather-dependent excursion interchangeable. You will find more ideas for choosing your places in our Sicily category.
FAQ
Is Sicily suitable for a beach holiday in winter?
We recommend not building a trip between November and March around daily swimming. Choose cities, culture and walks as the main programme and treat a possible swimming day as an extra.
Are museums open at Christmas and New Year?
That varies from one institution to another. Check the holiday notice of the museum you want to visit; regular weekly opening hours alone are not enough.
Can I travel without a hire car in winter?
Between larger cities, trains and scheduled buses are options. For excursions, check the valid timetable and the return journey, especially if your accommodation is outside the centre.
Is accommodation right on the beach worthwhile?
It can suit walks by the sea if restaurants and shops remain within reach. For a trip with many museum visits we would prefer a city location, so that not every activity begins with a journey.
What can I do in Palermo when it rains?
The Museo Salinas and the Antonio Pasqualino Puppet Museum are options for indoor visits. Check the opening days; for a puppet theatre performance you also need a suitable show date.
First choose your city base and the sights that work regardless of mountain or ferry operations. Through our travel advice, Travelissimo supports you in choosing suitable flights and accommodation that is open in winter.
